I’m really excited to introduce you to Jessica Peterman of Knickers Lingerie Boutique. She owns the most adorable window display in the heart of downtown Victoria. Her artistically curated shop is filled with a beautiful collection of delicates from both local and worldwide designers. You will find a unique selection of bras, panties, sleep/loungewear, boudoir, and bridal undergarments in several different styles and fabrics.
It was so nice to spend the morning browsing through the beautiful pieces and chatting with Jessica about lingerie and how she started her business. Such an inspiration! Jessica is full of knowledge and very passionate about what she does. There is so much more I would like to learn about this industry, and definitely a few things I need to add to my wardrobe! Check out our discussion below…
Why did you decide to open a lingerie shop?
-I actually went to school for architecture and managed a local bridal shop while I was studying. I enjoyed working in the industry and wanted a creative space of my own. I took a bit of a career turn and ended up opening Knickers Boutique in 2013. I love all things feminine and hope to empower women through the lingerie they wear. I also love using the space to host small bridal showers and private parties.
What’s a good staple piece you think every woman should own?
-A matching set (bra and panties). After talking to so many different women who come into the shop, I couldn’t believe how many of them have never owned a matching set before (as I slowly convert my eyes to the floor…totally guilty of this). Ideally, I think a matching set should be worn everyday. I know that’s not always an option but it’s so empowering. You might be the only person who knows you’re wearing it but you’ll feel more put together and ready to take on the day. It really does make a difference.
Have you ever thought about designing your own pieces or starting your own line?
-Every single day. I basically have an entire collection ready in my head. So often I will be looking for a specific piece that I want for the shop but I’m unable to find it anywhere. I know just what I want it to look like and what it should be made of. Yes, definitely sometime in the future I would like to start my own line. I’m currently making the silk robes that I sell in the shop (which are beautiful!).
Any brands or designers to look out for?
–Fortnight is a line handmade in Toronto, Canada. I love the clean and modern design of this collection. The pieces are really unique and very well made. The owner is such a sweetheart! She is very personable considering she sells her pieces to stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue all around the world.
–For Love & Lemons, an L.A. based company, has recently come out with a lingerie line called Skivvies. The pieces are a little more rebellious and risky, but they are absolutely gorgeous. The intricate details and patterns are chic and playful.
What inspires you?
-This city! It’s so easy to find beauty in it everyday. There are a lot of other young business owners right now. I feel like Victoria is at a time when young people are starting to take back the city and I feel so fortunate to be a little part of that.
-My Mom! She’s worked so hard at what she wanted to do with her life and still managed to be the best mother ever. She’s a powerhouse, kind hearted, and never stops moving. She’s where I get my constant energy from. (Warms my heart, so sweet!).
Jessica was so kind and approachable, I think this is such an important quality for somebody working in the lingerie industry. Many women, myself included, can find the world of lingerie a little stressful or overwhelming at times. Knickers Boutique provides a relaxed and intimate setting that welcomes all women to come and find something special. Jessica also offers personal shopping, bra fittings, and private lingerie or bridal showers. She recommends this as a great girl-power bonding time for female friends and family!
Make sure to stop by the boutique if you’re in town (561 Johnson Street, Victoria) or check out her website (www.knickerslingerie.com) to shop the wonderful collection online if you’re outside of Victoria. You can also follow Knickers Boutique on Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. Thank you so much for having me Jessica! So nice to meet you.
