If you’re anything like me your initial reaction to the discovery of CC creams was an eye-roll. What’s with the whole double-letter cream thing these days? Well, I finally had to give in and try out what everyone’s been talking about. CC cream’s big claim to fame is being the one product that moisturizes, evens skin tone, provides an illuminating glow, and protects against the sun all in one. A couple weeks ago I picked up the MAC Prep + Prime Colour Correcting Cream in Neutralize. I am genuinely surprised with the results and convenience of this product, not to mention the sparkly packaging it comes in.
As you already know, CC stands for colour correcting. There are four shades in the new MAC CC collection: Adjust, Illuminate, Neutralize, and Recharge. I’ve got really red cheeks and I’m always trying to find something to decrease the pigmentation on my face (especially on my lower cheeks and jawline) so Neutralize was the perfect shade for me. When I first saw this bright yellow cream I thought it would turn my face a weird fluorescent colour, but it didn’t at all. Yellow and red are opposite on the colour wheel. When you pair opposite colours together they erase harsh pigmentation and balance each other out (in this case, balancing out the shade of your skin). I’m surprised how naturally this cream blends into my skin, it doesn’t look like I’ve got a layer of foundation on my face but it reduces the redness like a foundation would. Here’s a sample on my wrist to show you the crazy colour of this cream:
This formula is sheer enough to wear under foundation if you want full coverage. I’m not a fan of layering a whole bunch of products on my face (my foundation philosophy has always been less is more), so I wouldn’t wear this under foundation on a regular basis. However, on the odd occasion that I really need it I can see it coming in handy. I’ve worn it on it’s own with a bit of concealer on the weekend and felt comfortable with the light coverage it provides. I think this will be a regular occurrence for me over the summer. I tend to wear less foundation over the summer anyways, so this seems like an easy choice. The Prime + Prep CC creams also protects your skin against UVA and UVB rays with SPF 30. If you’ve been thinking about giving double-letter creams a try, this is the season to do it!
