So the other night I had the honour of meeting Gabrielle Bernstein. No big deal, she just came to Victoria to host an intimate evening of inspiration with us local spirit junkies. It was incredible.
Gabrielle Bernstein is a modern-day spiritual guru that has been named “a next-generation thought leader” by Oprah Winfrey. She is the best selling author of several books including May Cause Miracles, Spirit Junkie, and Miracles Now. She is also a certified kundalini yoga instructor, motivational speaker, and life coach who emphases self-love, forgiveness, and a holistic approach to spirituality. Most of us in the audience had been following her work for years and admiring her light from afar. Until earlier this month when she sat in front of us on a small stage in the Victoria Conference Centre and talked to us like we were life long friends hanging out in her living room.
She opened the evening with a short meditation to help us breathe deeper and connect to the true reason we decided to show up for the event that night. Then she lead us through four steps of cultivating happiness.
1. Recognize what’s resisting happiness (this is most likely the ego). Call it out when it does this, separate it from yourself. “Laugh at the ego’s tiny mad ideas.”
2. Forgiveness. Towards yourself and towards others. “When you open your heart to forgiveness, expect miracles.”
3. Compassion. You must understand through compassion or you will misunderstand the times. “In my defensiveless, my safely lies.”
4. Be the light. Lead by example, lift others up. “Trust in your presence”.
Gabby shared personal stories throughout her whole speech. She spoke about recent times in her life where she has been faced with conflict between certain family members and friends. Times where her patience has been tested and she was forced to use forgiveness and compassion to guide herself through these situations. She held nothing back and spoke with honesty and vulnerability. By the time she got through the fourth step several audience members had teared up as she opened our eyes to the power we all hold in our own lives.
The floor was then open for audience members to ask questions. She answered topics concerning addictions, lack to motivation, and how to share your contribution/gift with the world. Spirits were uplifted and this little auditorium in Victoria felt like it was one with the world. She closed the night by leading us through another meditation. This one was a kundalini yoga chant for bringing actualization to ones greatest wishes. Gabby warned us that whatever we thought about during this chant will manifest in our lives (so think positive!). We closed our eyes, visualized our dreams, and sang together in prayer. It was one of the most powerful and beautiful experiences I’ve ever been a part of. There were no dry eyes left by the end of our practice and everyone rose for a standing ovation to cheer on Gabrielle and the beautiful messages she shared with us that night.
Then one by one we lined up to have our books signed. She spoke with each of us individually and let us take photos, etc. She told me I looked like Taylor Swift and that was the cherry on top of my perfect evening. I danced home with the biggest smile on my face. I’m so thankful for this night and best of all, I’m signed up for her Spirit Junkie Digital Masterclass in 2016. Universe, I’m ready!
